This activity is meant to be a self paced activity where the students will be directed to a website that has a few paragraphs of basic information about who the Mongols were. After the students have read these paragraphs, they will then be given the freedom to explore the other links that are at the bottom of the page at their own pace. After some time has passed the students will then be asked to write a few sentences, length based on grade level, about some things that they have learned and some conclusions they have come to about Mongol life. (Mongols, n.d.)
Upper Elementary Activities
For this activity the students will be exploring the geography of Mongolia by working in groups to explore the terrain, the surrounding neighbors, and the changing lives of the Mongolian nomads. After the students have completed this activity, they will be asked to write a letter to one of their friends that describes in detail about how Mongolian geography and climate differ from the geography and climate of our own location. (Proteacher, n.d.)
Fine Arts Activities
Starting with this unit and continuing for the rest of the year, the students will be paired with a pen pal from Mongolia that they will be given the chance to build a strong friendship with. The students will be asked to write to their pen pal at least once every other week. They will be instructed about specific things that they can talk about and they will also be given a good amount of freedom to write about topics of their choice. The hope for this activity is for the students to develop a good relationship with some one that is similar to them, but they are living in a different setting. This should be a continuous learning experience as they will grow to learn about life in Mongolia. (About.com, 2011)
